Today I am sharing an older image that I took while in the Catacombes de Paris. I had to use the available light from a flood light in the tunnel as no flash photography is allowed. This isn’t because it’s a mass burial site, but rather because the light degrades the bones. So this was taken hand-held, while bracing against a passage frame for stability on a 3 second exposure.
Have you ever looked at the horses on a carousel? I mean really looked? Creepy. I caught this one with a fish-eye lens.
If you read any books about career, life choices or any type of business book, most will tell you to seize the moment when opportunity presents itself. Here is a picture by photographer Colleen Niska who did just that when she noticed a tornado while taking a client’s wedding photos in Saskatchewan. Thanks to her creativity and quick thinking, she took some pretty outstanding images that have garnered worldwide attention.
On her Facebook page, she posted: “I’ve dreamed about a day like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could NOT wait to post these! Pretty sure this will only happen once in my lifetime!”
I’m gonna have to agree with her on that one. But what a day indeed! When I hear about stories of chance and opportunity that are seized and rewarded, I always feel inspired to do the same in my own life. One of my goals when taking a picture is to take something we see everyday and give it new life, like this hydrant. The next time you are out and about taking pictures, try lying on the ground for a different angle, or even just tilt your framing. Taking a different angle can add interest to almost anything – as can the PS Express app. I used the “super-punch” filter for this one.
I came across this old cigarette machine while in Maine. I can’t remember the last time I saw one of these… so naturally I had to take a picture of it. Interestingly it was still in use.
Perspective: A particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.
Perspective: The art of drawing solid objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point.
Perspective: What makes a photo interesting.
Personally, I find images that show a different viewpoint (or perspective) make the most interesting ones. This is why when everyone is snapping a picture of something, I’ll be that person off to the side, often lying on the ground, looking to create something different.
This past weekend I did a whirl-wind tour of Portland Maine. Here’s a snap I took out at ‘Port Head Light’ while being lulled by the sound of the ocean. This was taken with my iPhone 5, using the built in Noir filter.
For today’s Picture Perfect Tuesday, I’m sharing another shot of food. If you’ve ever dabbled in food photography (yes, your instagram counts!) you’ll know that lighting is everything. What I like about this image is how the highlights on the donuts help illustrate their freshness. Of course, that they are still sitting on the pan helps too…
Another tip when shooting food is to remove anything that you don’t need. Sometimes less really is more. That’s why I had to eat a few donuts first. 😉
Thanks to sharing sites like Instagram, we’re all now amateur food photographers. But food photography is an art in itself that involves carefully crafted positioning, the right amount of toasting, melting, etc by stylists to acheive an image that makes us salivate at first glance. While I am a trained photographer, I have never been a food photographer.
That said, I am pretty pleased with this pic that I snapped of the most delicous pop in your mouth sugary lemon cookie. Enjoy! (I know I did! #yum)
